Exploring Balance and Falls in Kennedy’s Disease: Dr. Louie Lee’s Research

Falls are a common and challenging issue for people living with Kennedy’s Disease (KD), often leading to serious injuries, reduced mobility, and fear of activity. Yet, despite their significant impact, balance and falls remain underexplored in this community. That’s why Dr. Louie Lee, with the support of KD-UK, is leading two innovative research studies to shed light on this critical area and pave the way for targeted interventions.

Study 1: Frequency and Circumstances of Falls

The first study seeks to quantify how often falls occur in people with KD and understand the specific circumstances that lead to these incidents. This research also explores the availability and effectiveness of current therapies aimed at falls prevention. By identifying patterns and triggers, this work could inspire better strategies to prevent falls and reduce associated risks.

Study 2: Lived Experiences of Balance and Falls

The second study takes a qualitative approach, diving into the personal stories of individuals with KD. Dr. Lee aims to uncover how people experience balance difficulties, their responses to falls, and the impacts on daily life. By highlighting obstacles and facilitators to physiotherapy and exercise, the study will offer invaluable insights into designing practical, tailored rehabilitation programmes.

Why This Research Matters

Understanding the factors that contribute to poor balance in KD is essential for creating effective rehabilitation solutions. These studies are laying the groundwork for future clinical practices and research, with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life for those affected by KD.

We are proud to support Dr. Louie Lee in this vital work, which has the potential to transform how balance and falls are addressed in KD care. Together, we’re taking steps toward a safer and more active future for people living with Kennedy’s Disease.
