Kennedy's Disease UK

Passing of our Trustee, Dr Michael Hope

KDUK is deeply saddened by the passing of our Trustee, Dr Michael Hope, who died last month at the age of 63.

Michael was diagnosed with Kennedy’s Disease in 2023, after more than eight years of navigating a difficult and often frustrating path to a confirmed diagnosis. His decision to become a trustee was deeply personal – shaped not only by his own experience but also by witnessing the progression of motor neurone disease in his uncle, who passed away at the age of 83.

Michael once shared:
“I watched my uncle progress with MND, becoming physically locked in, whilst his mind remained sharp. During my own long journey to diagnosis, I was sent down numerous specialist pathways. This gives me an understanding of the journeys people travel, either alone or with their families.”

As a trustee, Michael brought empathy, insight, and professional knowledge from his NHS career. His contributions were invaluable, and he worked hard to improve the lives of those affected by Kennedy’s Disease.

He said:
“I’ve seen courage, bravery and perseverance which inspires me to be of service – to represent and speak for people affected by KD.”

We are incredibly grateful for Michael’s time, wisdom and dedication. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
